The Read & Write Program
About Us
The Read & Write Program started 30 years ago with a mission that remains unchanged: To give students in underserved communities, many of whom are reading below grade level, a big boost in literacy and academic accomplishments so they can excel in school and life.
The Read & Write Program is the only free, year-round supplemental literacy program providing early intervention (accepting children at four and a half years of age), tailored to meet the specific and multiple needs of low-income Kingston students who might otherwise drop out of school. The program meets this goal by supporting Kingston children in gaining the literacy tools (along with the equally important, less tangible tools of persistence and the belief that one is smart and can achieve) needed for success in school and for higher learning after high school graduation.
While enrolled in the Read & Write Program, students make steady gains in literacy and comprehension skills in a safe and nurturing environment. As a result, children who might otherwise fall through the cracks are prepared for successful and productive lives as citizens of our community and of the world.
